profumo

Perfume is a “form of art” very appreciated by women and commercialized by men since ages. It’s included in the category of art, wellness and lifestyle, and for these reasons the city of Venice decided to dedicate a section of an important museum to this theme.

The “city of the lagoon” could be defined as the European capital of perfume, especially in middle ages: ships, which came back from East, were full of species, and special aromas like zibetto, storace, benzolino (fundamental ingredients for the preparation of perfumes). The Serenissima became very important in the preparation of this mixtures of scents, and for this reason in 1555 printed a treaty with 300 recipes dedicated to persons and environment perfumes.

That’s the reason why we propose a special visit to Palazzo Mocenigo, a trip across the precious rooms of the museum, which have a collection of objects, paints, textiles, old clothes, ornaments, proof of the huge role that Venice had in the history in Europe.

The palazzo, thanks to a renovated and expanded restoration in 2013, looks like a true patrician residence; it is not set up like a museum, but like a still populated palace. In fact, the environment evokes different aspects of the life and the activities of the eighteenth-century Venetian nobility.

Recently a new section was opened inside this space, in order to exhibit the perfume, mannerism of the medieval venetian tradition. Here is underlined the particular role of the city of Venice in the birth of this cosmetic routine and entrepreneurial resource. In the five rooms interchange sensorial experiences and multimedia instruments, for the purpose of creating an unreleased opportunity of information, emotion and in-depth analysis.

The precious art of perfume is presented in its fundamental elements: row materials of vegetable and animal origin, from which essences are obtained together with the description of some traditional extraction techniques. By following the path, you would be carried in the olfactory experience, where it’s possible to smell the principal fragrances of this art.

The experience of the rooms of fragrance will be an opportunity to talk about the fragrances spread especially in Venice, where even today there are artisan producers of perfumes, heritage of the great Venetian tradition of Muschieri.
