Contest Announcement

The Light Art Colors Contest is promoted by Venice Design Week and ADI Associazione Design Industriale. It is organized by the Cultural Association Arte e Design Venezia in collaboration with “Gioielli Nascosti di Venezia – Fondazione Venezia Servizi”.

Art. 1 The Goal of the Competition

Venice Design Week is announcing a competition focused on lighting design and lighting systems, one section of the contest is specifically dedicated to the architecture and the interior design relation with the natural and artificial light. Particular attention to the relation to their eco-friendly integration with home automation systems.

This competition will wrap up with the lighting prototypes and the selected projects exhibited and promoted during the next edition of the Venice Design Week, which will be held on October 3rd-11th 2020. We believe that the designers are inspired by the importance of light, which is unique to Venice, and from the art that characterizes this city.

Art. 2 The Jury

The Jury consists of five members who each have the right to vote.

The Director of the Museum who will host the exhibition;
Carlo Trevisani designer, representative of ADI Italian Design Association;
Architect Marco Zito – Professor at the IUAV Architecture University of Venice;
Anna Loporcaro, head of cultural program, MUDAM Luxemburg;
Claudio Cervelli, lighting design, Vicenza;
Other specialists in the field;
Director or Project Manager of the Partner Company;
A representative of Venice Design Week, without the right to vote, will act as coordinator.
The decision of the jury is by majority vote. The jury president will be chosen by the jury members.

Art.3 Fiduciary of the Competition

This competition’s fiduciary is the cultural association, Arte e Design Venezia. They will mediate between the promoter, the Jury and the participants.

Art. 4 The Awards

The exhibition will be held in Venice from October 3rd-11th, 2020.
The selected projects and prototypes will be exhibited or installed in some of the temporary exhibits during Venice Design Week.
The winning designer can use the special VDW Selection 2020 logo.
The organization will promote the products of the winning designer through specific campaign.
A money prize of €400 would be assigned.

Art. 5 Admission Requirements

The competition is open to:

a) Professionals (labeled “P”)
Italian and/or international designers, architects and engineers, companies. Contestants can be independent contractors or employed. Those professionals who are employed by a company must submit the company’s authorization in order to apply.

b) Students (labeled “S”)
Students of Design, Architecture and/or Engineering schools.

Group participation is allowed for both Professionals and Students. In such case, the team must nominate a group leader and he/she will be in charge of maintaining communication with the Venice Design Week organization.

Participation in the competition is forbidden for Jury members, for their family, for Venice Design Week staff, and for those staffed in the offices or companies of the Jury members.

Participation fees:
Professionals: €90 reduction is preview for associated of ADI (66€)
Students: free

Application deadline: July 28th, 2020

If you like to present more than a project it is possible with the addition of the 50% of the participation fee for each project presented.

Art. 6 Projects

Both published and unpublished projects are acceptable for submission.

In the case of published projects, applicants have to mention the awards they have been presented, received and their results.
Also, it must be declared if they are already available on the market and/or when they are expected to be released to the public.

Art. 7 Projects Requirements

Applicants must send in two tables in A3 format (42cm base x 29.7cm high) in a high-resolution pdf file (printing quality 300dpi). Drawings must be to scale and show an overview and a detailed view. (We suggest to use the 1st table to express the creation with photos and the 2nd table to have a rendering for the technical drawings).
Applicants must also send us a short project report which describes the inspiration, characteristics, the chosen materials, a market analysis, and any other relevant information. This description must be submitted in A4 format (allowed formats: .doc and .pdf) and must not exceed 2 pages, please not write your name on any support but only the code (six letters or numbers) or fantasy name/group name or a sentence, NO logo of your business please.

Applicants can illustrate their projects using other drawings or images, but they must be in the above-mentioned tables or in the description. It is possible to add a YouTube or Vimeo video link of the product. However, videos can be no longer than 30 seconds.

On all tables and descriptions, the applicants must write the code or the fantasy name/group name or a sentence and, depending on their category, the applicants must add the proper labels “P” or “S” on all the file names (P-sole_01 or S-12345_01 for example).

Art.8 Identification

Entries submitted by competitors must be marked with a code or a fantasy name or name of the group and/or a sentence.

The details of the solo designer or the group must be reported via the online submission form to Venice Design Week. Participants must sign the form to accept the competition terms and conditions noted on the announcement and also send in writing, the name of the group or the logo and the category (S/P) in the subject line of the email.

The subscriptions will be confirmed from the 20th of May.

Art. 9 Usage Rights

The copyrights of the works are the property of their respective designer. Once applied and submitted to Venice Design Week, they authorize Venice Design Week to use the same material for online and offline communication, to be used in printed format and for presenting the material at the exhibition.

Participants can protect their works in advance through safekeeping or patents.

Art. 10 Submission deadline

Registration to the competition opens at the release of this announcement.

Entries are accepted till July 28th 2020 at 2 p.m. (CET), the contest has been postponed to july.

The secretary will divide the projects into two categories: P for professionals and S for students.
No name or logo of the participant on the materials you send now, we will ask to the selected designer other information later in August.

Art. 11 Information and publishing

Venice Design Week is committed to present the initiative to the national press and to highlight the results via the most effective channels.

All applicants immediately authorize Venice Design Week to exhibit and present their projects, if selected. They also authorize Venice Design Week to publish their projects in a catalog and on specialized press media. The applicants agree that the only obligation of Venice Design Week is to report the applicant’s names. Applicants further agree that all materials (text and images) may freely be modified according to the communication needs of the various media used. They also agree that Venice Design Week and Arte e Design Venezia are free from any liability for any violation of third party rights.

The non-winning applicants can decide to have their work not published. In this case, they should communicate their decision to the secretary no later than 5 days from the announcement of the final results.
The publication of the results will occur within 60 days from the competition deadline. The winners will be informed by mail or phone, while other participants will gain knowledge of their status only by viewing the results on the website.
