Laura Volpi graduated with a degree in scenography and sculpture and approached the jewel world in order to experiment sculpture in a wearable dimension.
Can sculpture exist in a wearable form, always on the skin?
Can a jewel hold out the plastic and graphic dimensions of a sculpture?
Laura has been experimenting and seeking answers for 25 years. The first influential contacts were with Davide De Paoli, who initiated her to the potentialities of plate sculpture, and with Arnaldo Pomodoro, whom she could meet through a scholarship. During the collaboration with Pomodoro which lasted a few years, she had the opportunity to explore sculptural volumes and light vibrations. How to wear a sculpture? How to miniaturize a plastic object? Something began in London with her first loves: Henry Moore and Burri. Moore enthralled her with the study and simplification of volumes, even in monumental dimensions; of Burri she loves his rough and daring materiality. A most recent coup de foudre is Ross Lovegrove and his research about the transmutation of organic matters.
The Beauty and the Beast
Material: silver Ring with grape chalcedony and sphene.
Laura Volpi, a jewel designer with 25 years of experience, has overcome a moment of difficulty in 2017, drastically calling in question her creative process.
This ring speaks of a very personal rebirth, which had a strong effect also on her own creations. She has committed herself starting from contrasting opposites: a very uneven, rough stone and a very warming, heartening calibrated one. What unites these two opposites? Laura decided in september 2107 to create an organic substrate, combining both mineral materials with the very lymph of life, a supporting structure with a strong identity. The source of inspiration for the organic structure came from a striking exhibition of the great designer Lovegrove at the Centre Pompidou. What can one be reborn from? From the body, from the bones, from the muscle-tensing structure? How is one born, how is one born again? Perhaps with irony, and with a certain degree of impertinence.
